University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz awards an honorary doctorate
We are delighted to congratulate Professor Shimon Sakaguchi on being awarded an honorary doctorate by the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. This distinction recognizes his pioneering contributions to immunology, particularly his groundbreaking discovery of regulatory T cells, which has fundamentally advanced our understanding of immune regulation and tolerance.
In 2025, Professor Sakaguchi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance and the role of regulatory T cells in preventing autoimmune disease.
The honorary doctorate acknowledges Professor Sakaguchi’s outstanding scientific achievements and his profound impact on biomedical research worldwide. It was a particular honor for some PI’s of the TRR 355 to attend the award ceremony and celebrate this special occasion in recognition of his remarkable contributions to science.
